A good friend of former Namibian rugby captain Gerhard Mans, who died Wednesday after being hit by a car while cycling, has shared his account of what happened, according to a witness.
Mans, 60, was captain of the Namibia national team and also played for the Free State for many seasons in the late 1980s and 1990s, he was out cycling Wednesday morning on the Windhoek west bypass.
According to a friend, Jaco Lamprecht, who was quoted by InformationMans’ car crashed into the yellow line of the road.
“We collided as we went from contradictory directions,” Lamprecht said.
“At the Okapuka bridge, I turned around and wanted to catch up with him so we could ride together. Before the Elisenheim bridge, I could see Gerhard in front of me.
“I hit the bridge and bent over Gerhard Junior (Mans’ son) as he passed me on the other side of the road on his way to the Okahandja road block.
“The next minute I was on the road ahead,” Lamprecht said.
“A police combi was busy pulling on the road side by side. I saw Gerhard lying on the shoulder of the road.
“We immediately saw that it was a fatal accident.”
Lamprecht said another rider, with a punctured tire, was standing next to Gerhard.
“It simply came to our notice then.
“He told me he saw the driver in the white BMW coming with police cars behind him. The driver was busy on his cell phone.
“The next minute he went over the yellow line, and hit Gerhard at full speed.
“It simply came to our notice then. Because the police were right behind him they immediately stopped and got on the road. ”
“I called an ambulance and said it was urgent. We called the family to get Gerhard Junior; He did not know what had happened, ”said Lamprecht.
The witness of the accident told Lamprecht that police tested an alcohol blower on the driver of the BMW driver, a Botswana national, who showed 0.23. The car had no number plates or license disc. He was arrested at the scene.
“It simply came to our notice then. Gerhard was 100% inside the yellow line and did not know the BMW was coming from behind, ”said Lamprecht.
