UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the move towards 8 billion people as an occasion to celebrate our diversity but also a reminder of our shared responsibility to take care of our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still lack our commitment.

More than half of the projected increase in population by 2050 will be concentrated in 8 countries, the Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
