Google temporarily shuts down Google Maps traffic data in Ukraine – SABC News

Google confirmed on Sunday that it has temporarily disabled some Google Maps tools for Ukraine, which provide live traffic and traffic information on different locations.

The company said it had taken global action to turn off Google Maps traffic and live information on how busy places such as shops and restaurants in Ukraine are for the safety of the country’s municipalities, after consulting with authorities including regional authorities.

Ukraine is facing attacks by Russian forces that invaded the country on Thursday. When missiles hit Ukrainian cities, nearly 400,000 civilians, mostly women and children, fled to neighboring countries.

Russia calls its operations in Ukraine a “special operation”.

Major technology companies including Google have said they are taking new measures to protect the safety of users in the area.

Google said live traffic information would remain available to drivers using its turn-by-turn navigation features in the area
