The Minister of Public Works, Pravin Gordhan, has once again defended disposal of the majority of the state in South African Airways (SAA). He says that there was transparency in the agreement with the Takatso Consortium.
Gordhan faced a number of questions from MPs about the agreement after presenting a vote on his department’s budget to parliament on Friday.
Some opposition MPs claim that the agreement is secret and have threatened legal action to divulge the details.
The sale of 51% of the state’s stake to the Takatso Consortium has sparked controversy over lawsuits. The government says that the passenger plane has been bleeding the state finances, hence the decision to sell part of its share.
“The sale of 51% of its stake in the Takatso Group allows me to reassure the public and esteemed members that there has been complete transparency in this process that all necessary legal procedures have been followed, despite many lamentable attempts to sabotage or undermine it. which is an important task in reviewing the SOE from damage caused by citizenship, “said Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Public Works.
However, this did not convince some members of the opposition. They say the deal raises more questions than answers.
“There are still so many questions as to whether there is real transparency. Answer these questions because the League does not, the media try to cover these issues to give South Africans clarity but there are no real answers. The Minister of the Ministry must now tell us what this transaction entails, “says Wouter Wessel, MP for Freedom Front Plus.
“There seems to be a constant tendency to rob state-owned enterprises that would help us with the country’s social and economic development needs but also enable the state to use SOE with regard to SAA ministers providing for us in court,” said Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, MP of the United Democratic Movement.
Gordhan adds that the Takatso Consortium will pump R3 billion in working capital into the passenger plane.
