Supporters of former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede have expressed disappointment after Durban’s High Court barred the public from attending the case due to COVID-19 protocols.
They gathered in court to support Gumede on Tuesday morning.
The case against Zandile Gumede and 21 others has been referred to the High Court in Durban:
Gumede and some of his co-defendants were arrested in 2019.
In June, the case was postponed for the parties to exchange further details.
A spokesperson for Gumede supporters, Ntando Khuzwayo, said Gumede said the case had dragged on for years without a trial.
“Even the general public is not allowed, and that doesn’t make sense because we are at level 1. We are very worried… next year it will be four years. The case is dragging on and we expect the state to put [request] for another postponement because we don’t think they’re ready for trial. We asked them for more details, ”says Khuzwayo.
