President Cyril Ramaphosa has called South Africa’s latest Olympic hero. Tatiana Skun Maker,Congratulations.
In an audio clip posted on the president’s Twitter account, Rama Poza spoke to Shanemaker and her coach, Rocco Mailing, on Friday.
Shane Maker won the world record 200m breaststroke and the first gold medal in Japan at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.
“Congratulations, you lifted the country,” Rama Poza told Shanemaker in the clip below.
“When I saw your performance in the first race you won the silver medal, I knew you were keeping something.
“Thank you very much. It was incredible. You did this for the country and for yourself, and we pay tribute to you … we are this incredible. I’m really happy to see the performance. “
