How often do you do digital detox? Can I even be away from the device for more than an hour?
According to Unilever’s science and technology research, about 60% of people currently spend more than 6 hours a day in front of digital devices.
This means that working days can have the same effect on the skin as spending 25 minutes in the midday sun without protection.
Unilever found that about 64% of three people, two out of three, do not know how harmful blue light is to their skin.
Blue light can penetrate the skin much deeper than ultraviolet (UV) light, affecting the skin as well as disturbing the biological clock.
Studies show that it can induce both immediate and persistent pigmentation, which can be present even after 3 months.
In addition, these rays interfere with the production of melatonin, increase stress hormone levels, and excite nerves, which can disrupt sleep patterns.
The study also found that 30 hours of exposure to blue light from smartphone and laptop screens can increase skin cell inflammation levels by 40%.
“It’s likely that this year’s exposure to blue light has increased as many workers in the office have increased their time in front of the screen as face-to-face meetings have transitioned to virtual,” said Science & Global Vice. President Technology, Beauty & Personal Care, Samantha Tucker-Samaras explained.
Samaras encourages people to choose skin care products that contain antioxidants, niacinamides, and zinc oxide.
“Limiting screen time helps not only our overall skin health, but also our general health,” she said.
How to beat the screen blues
Unilever scientists recommend the use of products that contain blue light-neutralizing ingredients and skin healing to protect against blue light.
We recommend looking for products that contain the following ingredients: -Products with optics minimize visible light to prevent sunburn on the skin. For example, BB cream has been scientifically proven to minimize the effects of blue light by 80%.
Zinc oxide that creates a protective barrier for the skin.
Vitamin C protects and restores skin cells from oxidative damage induced by blue light.
Vitamin B6 counteracts the depletion of antioxidants caused by visible light and effectively suppresses the oxidative stress caused by visible light.
Niacinamide restores skin surface cells from blue light-induced oxidative stress and provides strong protection against blue light-induced skin damage.
