The husband of the heroic fourth-grade teacher who was killed defending her students during a massacre at a Texas primary school has also died, members of the teacher’s family said Thursday.
The GoFundMe page set up by Debra Austin, who is the cousin of teacher Irma Garcia, said that Irma Joe’s husband “died tragically this morning (5/26/2022) as a result of a medical emergency.”
“I truly believe that Joseph died of a broken heart and that the love of his life has been too much to pay for over 30 years,” she said.
John Martinez, who identified as Garcia’s nephew, also tweeted: “I am heartbroken and deeply saddened to announce the passing of my Tia (aunt) husband Irma Joe Garcia to grief.”
Ernie Zuniga, news anchor for local KABB FOX San Antonio station, tweeted that Garcia had died of a heart attack.
The couple, who have been married for 24 years, according to the Robb Elementary website schoolleave four children behind.
Irma Garcia and her co-teacher Eva Mireles, who had linked classrooms, died in the mass shooting.
The shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, was inside the building for about 40 minutes before police entered and shot him deadly.
