I want to lead the team’s songs rather than being a captain, says Lyon, Australia-SABC News

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has established Pat Cummins as the next captain on the test side and Steve Smith as the deputy high-speed bowler, establishing himself as a potential leader for the team.

Both Cummins and Smith interviewed for the captain, Cummins is expected to replace Tim Payne after getting out of the role in the “sexting” scandal within three weeks of the onset of ashes.

Lyon said he was impressed with the leadership of his New South Wales teammate Cummins last year.

“The two men interviewed by Cricket Australia about their role are probably the two best candidates in my eyes,” Lyon told reporters Thursday.

“To be honest, I think (Cumins) did a really good job (at NSW).

“I know it’s a kind of another fish kettle, but if he nods, he has a lot of senior players around him to support him.

“But when you look at Steve Smith, I think he has the best batter in the world.

“He has a great cricket mind and I don’t have a drama where both of them are raising their hands for the captain.”

34-year-old Lyon is one of Australia’s senior players after 100 tests and is tasked with singing the team’s winning song “Under the Southern Cross” after winning the match.

Lyon said he preferred the status quo when asked if he had the ambition of a formal leadership role.

“To be honest, if you raise your hand to the captain, you’ll have to hand over the team’s song,” Lyon said.

“I would rather lead the team’s song … I’ll keep my hand down.”

Lyon needs another wicket to reach 400 in the test. This is a milestone that missed him when he lost to India 2-1 last summer.

“Obviously, it’s been in my head for quite some time since the last test on India,” he said.

“I’m more worried about the whole test series, I’m sure I’m playing my part in the Australian cricket team, and I’m sure I’ve won and held these ashes.”
