International donors pledge 9.1 billion euros to support Ukrainian refugees – SABC

Donors including the Canadian government and the European Commission on Saturday pledged ịgb 9.1 billion in donations, loans and assistance to support refugees fleeing the war in Russia.

A fundraising event in Warsaw, Poland, brought in 1.8 billion euros to support internally displaced persons in Ukraine, as well as € 7.3 billion for refugees fleeing the country to neighboring states.

Governments, corporations and individuals have received 4.1 billion euros in donations, which will be widely distributed by the Ukrainian government or the United Nations.

The remaining € 5 billion is loans and grants from the European Union (EU) financial institutions – including a euro 4 billion program to help provide housing, education and health care for refugees arriving in the EU.

“I can announce today for the European Commission that we want to give one billion euros, 600 million of which will go to Ukraine, the Ukrainian authorities and some parts of the United Nations… and 400 million euros will go further. says that it is doing a remarkable job and is helping the incoming refugees, ”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said he visited Kyiv on Friday and supported the event with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“As the social crisis intensifies and the need continues, our collaborative response will continue,” Trudeau said via a video link.

More than 4 million people have now fled Ukraine to seek refuge in EU countries, while 6.5 million people have fled their homes but remain in Ukraine, the European Commission said.
