Joburg City Power strengthens its support teams to solve problems caused by power cuts

The city of Johannesburg has to deal with multiple outages exacerbated by load shedding.

CAPE TOWN – Eskom began implementing Phase 4 load shedding on Saturday afternoon, requiring Joburg City Power to bolster its support teams and resources to deal with multiple outages exacerbated by power outages.

The electric utility is grappling with recorded calls from residents complaining of extended power outages unrelated to load shedding.

Isaac Mangena of Joburg City Power says load shedding puts a strain on infrastructure.

“Our infrastructure is already under huge strain as we speak, and offloading is not going to help. This comes as we were still facing backlog due to increased demand since the surge of cold hit this weekend however we have teams across depots to take care of load shedding which really requires us to split our resources between handling normal day to day outages and supporting activation and disabling hourly load shedding,” says Mangena.

Eskom has accelerated the load shedding from Stage 2 to Stage 4, which will be suspended at 10 p.m. Saturday.

Load shedding will then resume at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning until 10 p.m.
