“Kare, cancel this thing” – Ramaphosa in banner saga – SABC News

President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa to cancel the R22 million Flag Pole Project after receiving strong public criticism.

The 100m flagpole is to be installed at the Pretoria Freedom Park.

Mthethwa has previously defended the project, saying his department was tasked with promoting public relations.

The minister later said he had made a public statement on the matter and that the system will be reviewed.

President Ramaphosa addressed the issue at the Black Business Council, in Midrand, north of Johannesburg last night: “Mthethwa called me and said…. Kare, no really they are not happy. He said, “What can I do? Can you cancel this?” Now I say it because we are a listening government. We listen to what we have to say. We don’t run after people, we listen.

“Minister Mthethwa can say, yes Mr. President, we will pull this thing off. Besides, the price is very high. “As soon as our economy flies, then we will see it.”

Millions of South African flags “joined” the flag against Nathi Mthethwa

The R22 million flag saga has been popular for several weeks now, with some calling for Mthethwa’s head. Controversy has been raised by social media users questioning whether the multi-million rand flag would make sense in a country plagued by poverty and other social problems.

Some have called Ramaphosa for his recent call on the issue, questioning whether he saw anything wrong with the project when it was approved by the Cabinet earlier this year.
