Kidnappings, murders, rapes and car crimes have increased significantly in Gauteng. That’s according to the fourth district quarterly crime statistics for the operating year 2021/22. This covers crimes committed between January and March this year.
Gauteng sheriff Elias Mawela has described the crime situation in Gauteng as a disappointment for police and residents. He was presenting the Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Social Security in Johannesburg.
“Period of discontent” driven by a sharp rise in protests. Thus, Elias Mawela, Governor of Gauteng, has described the first three months of the year as showing a marked increase in almost all crime groups.
Murders increased by 45%, car crimes by 26% and money transfers by almost 16%, while no bank robberies were recorded between January and March this year.
“Regarding the murder case, esteemed comrades, we have recorded a 45.2% increase in murders amounting to 1,403 people killed during this period. This is 437 more murders compared to the same period in 2020/2021, “says Mawela.
Crimes against women and children also increased significantly, while murders against children increased by 80%. The number of sexual offenses against children decreased by 3.2%, while the number of attempted murders of children increased by 150%.
“When you look at the number of women who were murdered, we reflected an increase of 62 charges, sexual offenses, we showed a 359 increase compared to attempted murders still among women, there is also an increase there, about 139 regarding GBV assaults, we also report an increase of 483, common assaults 1,094, “said Brigadier Mpho Chakalane, Gauteng police.
All Gauteng districts recorded an increase in crime. The highest total crime was reported in the Johannesburg district, followed by Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
The police stations that contributed most to the district’s crime statistics were Honeydew, Johannesburg Central, Brooklyn in Tshwane and Randfontein in the West Rand district.
