Level 4 warning for rain issued in Western Cape

South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe weather conditions which are expected to hit the West End this weekend.

A series of severe cold fronts are expected to land on the western parts of the Western Cape on Sunday and Monday evenings, resulting in high rainfall mainly in the southwestern parts of the province on Tuesday evening.

Accumulated rainfall is expected to reach between 50-80mm over the mountainous areas, the weather service said. These high rainfall accumulations are likely to cause localized flooding in these areas.

A yellow level 3 wind warning has also been issued in the province since Sunday.

“In the face of approaching cold winds, strong northwest winds with speeds of between 50-60km / h, up to 80km / h, are expected over southern Namakwa, western Vinegar Point, Central Karoo, northern parts of the Garden Route areas and in Cape Town from Sunday to Tuesday. These strong winds are likely to damage these areas, ”the weather service warned.

A level 2 yellow warning for wind and waves has been issued since Sunday afternoon.

“Strong northwest winds with speeds of between 50-60km / h, associated with cold fronts, are expected along the coast between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas from Sunday evening to Tuesday. Coupled with significant southwest waves of 4.0 to 4.5m from Monday to Tuesday morning, these conditions could lead to navigational difficulties at sea, ”the weather service warned.
