At least 350 people died when violence erupted in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng shortly after former President Jacob Zuma began serving a 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court on July 8, 2021.

Loss of life, looting of malls and shopping malls and other businesses characterized the unrest.

About 20 trucks on the N3 motorway were also set on fire. The hearings will investigate the causes and impact of the unrest on human rights, as well as incidents of racial tension.
