The French sports minister said on Monday that Liverpool fans were without valid tickets responsible for initial problems with the public at the Champions League final, the problem then being exacerbated by local youths trying their way to the game to force.
Some French far-right politicians, such as Eric Zemmour, said the public’s problems at Saturday’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid were mainly caused by local youths from the nearby Seine Saint-Denis Paris suburb. .
“What we really need to keep in mind is that what happened, first of all, was this massive gathering of British supporters of the Liverpool club, without tickets, or with fake tickets,” said French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera.
“When there are so many people at the entrance of the stadium, people will try to force their way through the doors of the Stade de France, and a certain number of young people from the neighborhood who were present visited by mixing with the public, “she told French radio station RTL.
The match began with a 35-minute delay after police tried to stop people trying to force their way into the French national stadium without tickets, while some ticket holders complained that they were not allowed in.
Television footage showed images of young men, not wearing red Liverpool jerseys, jumping through the gates of the stadium and running away. Others outside, including children, were tear gas fired by riot police, a Reuters witness said.
Chris Philp, the British Minister for Technology, said he was shocked by the images.
“I was horrified to see those photos of fans, including children, fans with a disability, pepper spray by French police,” he added. “And from the photos I saw, there was no clear justification for that kind of behavior.”
The chaotic scenes in the French national stadium were called a national embarrassment, with France hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan said the treatment of Liverpool fans was “unacceptable” and that the club wanted a “transparent investigation” by the governing body UEFA.
British Sports Minister Nadine Dorries also urged UEFA to launch an investigation.
French Minister Oudea-Castera said there were “no problems” regarding Real Madrid supporters at Saturday’s match and that the Spanish team managed to control their traveling fans better than Liverpool.
