North West Human Settlements’ MEC Lenah Miga has called on the local community of Mahikeng to ensure retailers comply with workplace health and safety codes.
This follows a Fire that destroyed several shops on Station Road in town on Friday.
The incident occurs two years after a Fire destroyed several shops in a mall across the same street due to illegal power connections.

According to Miga, the municipality should do its part to ensure that shopkeepers comply.
“The municipality needs to strengthen their area to ensure they do a lot of their work in terms of policing and making sure businesses in the city are compliant on electricity and other related matters. We then get to a point where we make sure that the community has a crucial role to play in making sure these issues of connections and HSE compliance are in place,” says Miga.
