Johannesburg – The case of a 50-year-old man accused of trafficking 50 Ethiopian nationals was referred to the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Ahmed Kafecho, 50, was initially arrested last week on kidnapping charges for allegedly detaining the 50 Ethiopian nationals aged 12 to 50 at a house in Zacharia Park. He allegedly demanded money from the victim’s families in exchange for their release.

It would have facilitated the transfer of Ethiopian nationals to South Africa.

NPA spokesman Phindi Mjonondwane said the rescued men were being processed by the Home Office to determine their status in the country.

“The case has been postponed until October 25, 2021 for further investigation and a possible bail hearing,” she said.

Mjonondwane said Kafecho was facing charges of trafficking, extortion and kidnapping. .

She explained: “The alternative counts of attempted extortion and kidnapping stem from allegations that the accused demanded money from the families of the men held captive, in exchange for their release.” she declared.

Police stormed the Zacharia Park home last week and arrested a suspect for allegedly holding the men captive.

Police said they were working with Home Affairs to establish how Ethiopian nationals entered South Africa and to determine their status in the country.

Police also said they were in direct contact with some of the families of the kidnapped victims and had been informed of their fate.
