EAST LONDON – Chairman Cyril Ramaphosa said he was devastated that 21 young lives had been lost at Scenery Park.

Ramaphosa was delivering his eulogy at the funeral of the teenagers who died on Wednesday at Enyobeni Tavern in east London.

“We lost our children here. There are parents who will no longer be able to hug or kiss their son or daughter. We are losing our future generation to the scourge of underage drinking. Alcohol is very addictive. It is something to be consumed in moderation and responsibly, and only by those who are of legal age to do so and mature enough to handle the effects.

“We are all affected when these bad things take hold in our communities. Today it’s someone else’s child, tomorrow it could be yours. City officials and local law enforcement officials must heed the pleas and complaints of our communities, and not ignore them or take them seriously.”

Nineteen empty caskets arrived at Wednesday’s funeral service.

Also speaking at the funeral earlier, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said the whole world mourned with South Africa over the tragic death of the teenagers.

Two families were not present at the funeral as they had already buried their loved ones – who were part of the deceased 21.

Mabuyane said the farewell was about saying goodbye to the young lives that were lost.

“The tragedy that happened here, where we lost the lives of 21 young people, who are sleeping peacefully in their coffins in front of us. [We need to support the families] during this difficult time as they go through the pain of burying the remains of their children.

Investigations into what happened last Sunday are still ongoing.

SCHOLARSHIP EXCLUDED

According to a doctor, who spoke to the mourners at the funeral, a stampede was ruled out as the cause of death.

Dr Mathiyane explained: “We have to base our conclusions on the evidence that has been gathered from these results. It is for this reason, Mr. President and members of the Scenery Park community, that we ask people to wait for the results because this investigation is very sensitive and we must treat it as such.
