Massmart, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), says it is rebuilding its robbed stores because security has been restored following widespread unrest in July last year, allowing them to reopen.. A total of 39 stores were hijacked and vandalism was carried out in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Since then, they have managed to reopen five Game stores in KwaZulu-Natal. The five that were completely destroyed are still being rebuilt.
Addressing customers at the official reopening of one of Pietermaritzburg’s stores, Massmart’s Katherine Madley said, “We are coming back stronger. We came back better. We have better stock and better stores. We also have more to offer customers now than we had before the robbery. We are very excited about that. We have rebuilt and grown back for South African customers here at KZN.
Meanwhile, the buyer, Nomfundo Ngcobo, urged the public to support the trade instead of robbing them.
“The store is very large. We get everything we need in the store. I was very disappointed when the robbery took place. We ran out of food. The price in some stores became high. There were very few shops operating. The robbery can never happen again because, after all, we are the ones who are affected. “
