Mauritius: 22nd African Championship: Website Launch, Promotional Video and Official Song

In the context of 22and The African Championships to take place from 8-12 June 2022 in Mauritius, the official website, song and promotional video were launched, this afternoon, at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex in the presence of the Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint , and the President of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Giandev Mootea.

In his speech, Mr Mootea pointed out that 47 of the 54 countries on the African continent had confirmed their participation in the Olympics in June adding that other countries had until May to confirm their attendance. He said around 500 athletes were expected to participate and stated that Reunion Island had also confirmed participation. This, he rejoiced, would further increase the competition on the continent. He also announced that British politician and former track and field athlete, Lord Sebastian Coe, would be in attendance.

Speaking of sponsors, he highlighted that about 20 companies had come forward and asked others to join. Regarding the sanitation protocols put in place, he said that a medical Commission for Covid-19 had been formed in collaboration with the Government and the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Regarding accommodation, the President of the Organizing Committee stated that the athletes would stay at the Ravenala Attitude Hotel. He also spoke about the accreditation of athletes as well as journalists and informed that from 1st until April 30, accreditation will be open to journalists. He further gave an example, the designs of medals and clothes for officials and volunteers are being worked on.

Mr Kris Chedumbrum, who is in charge of the website and social media for 22and The 2022 African Senior Athletics Championships, also intervened and stated that the website would serve as a communication tool for the latest news on the holding of the African Athletics Championships in Mauritius. When the game kicks off in June, all the results and some events will be posted live on this website, he highlights.

According to him, the website will become a reference for official information about these championships. Thus, the general public and the press will be able to use the site to obtain reliable information, he added.

Regarding the official anthem selected for the Championship, it was composed by producer and musician, Mr Gerard Louis, and interpreted by Member of Parliament, Ms Marie Sandra Monia Mayotte. On that occasion, Mr Louis was awarded a certificate of recognition by Mr Giandev Mootea for offering to the Organizing Committee 22and 2022 African Senior Athletics Championships, official music and song (Mama Africa). Minister Toussaint also gave him a shield.

African Championship

After hosting two editions of the African Championships in 1992 and 2006, Mauritius is once again gearing up to become the athletics capital of Africa from 8-12 June 2022. The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has appointed Mauritius to host the Championships.

The highly anticipated event will be held at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex. Built in 2019, this multi-sport complex includes a soccer field, Olympic swimming pool, sports hall and athletic track. All of these infrastructures are very respectful of international standards.

The President of CAA, Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, was on an official visit to Mauritius last January. During his stay, he visited the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex and met with representatives of the various commissions of the 22 . organizationand African Championship.

There are 45 events in the program: 22 for Men and 22 for women and one mixed event. A 10 Km Trail Race for men and women will also be held. The men’s competitions include: hurdles, decathlon, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, hammer and javelin; and for girls, hurdles, heptathlon, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.
