Former President Thabo Mbeki says he sympathizes with the president Cyril Ramaphosa’s position is that credible sources can investigate the burglary and theft at Phala Phala’s farm in Limpopo.
Former state security director Arthur Fraser filed a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa, claiming the president wanted to cover up the theft.
Mbeki answered questions from the media after holding a small event with the Drakensberg Boys ’Choir in Johannesburg on his 80th birthday.
Former President Mbeki says he hopes the Hawks will move quickly on the Phala Phala case because the country is looking for answers.
“I hope the Hawks, as they say they are investigating, will take action quickly because I am quite sure that as far as I can see, the country is asking for lots and lots of explanations, and I am quite sure that the legal process will help us with these. And I have great sympathy for the position he said to bring out the truth through the credible institutions of the state. ”
Mbeki also considered publication of the last part of the State Capture Report. He says steps need to be taken.
“I think this is a very, very challenging moment for all of us South Africans because the committee, Chief Justice Zondo, has produced a very detailed report on a lot of things that are wrong in the country. We have to answer. But there are many, many questions that we need to answer… what happened that, as South Africans, we allowed this devastation? So, I think we all need to be told what to do to keep this from happening. How can we recover from this great tragedy? ”
About the ANC, a party he once led, Mbeki says he needs to look at himself and deal with the mistakes he has made in South Africa.
“All of these horrible things are happening as a result of bad governance. The ANC was a government, so it has to take responsibility, it has to look at itself and see what went wrong. So you have to do something for yourself and you really have to try to make up for this great evil they have done to our society. ”
