Although their passion is firmly rooted in the medical field, two lovers Leroy Kgopa and his wife Itumeleng are the brains behind the coffee brand Home of Bean.
The lovely couple are professionally qualified in the medical space and Leroy is a diagnostic radiographer while Itumeleng is a qualified radiation therapist.
According to Independent Media, the couple has been running the coffee business for the past three years.
Home of Bean buys beans from various roasters in Burundi, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Guatemala, and their leap into business started after Leroy volunteered to clean dishes at a coffee shop.
“I volunteered so I could learn more about the business side of coffee. It helped me a lot to learn more about coffee and also increased my knowledge in other aspects of the business, such as sourcing coffee beans, storing them, preparing the coffee beans and selling the finished product,” said Leroy.
Currently operating in Maboneng, the heart of Johannesburg, the shop started in a small Maboneng courtyard in 2019 before moving to the larger Arts on Main premises on Fox Street in Maboneng in winter 2021.
“The van is an extension of the coffee shop and does not stop at the shop. It works like a mobile coffee service,” Itumeleng said.
“When we have an event that is held somewhere other than the store. The combi then acts as a mobile service to get to the event and deliver coffee service to another location.
While many say coffee offers some therapeutic benefits, the work of the two lovebirds also offers medical expertise at various public hospitals in Johannesburg.
