GRABOUW – The Western Cape Human Settlements Department says more than 13,000 people are on the waiting list for accommodation in the local municipality of Theewaterskloof.

MEC Tertius Simmers said the housing waitlist was a long process that involved all spheres of government.

Community members in the Waterworks informal settlement have urged the government to provide adequate housing after their homes were destroyed in a fire last week.

Provincial MEC for Human Settlements Tertius Simmers replied: “Unfortunately we have seen the invasion of the largest component which was supposed to de-densify the informal settlement so that we can start to formalize the construction, you know. In reality , no, there will be no building of houses there because the area cannot be dedensified.”

Simmers said the waiting list for the municipality was long.

“According to our database, [there’s] a backlog of 18,361,” Simmers said.
