Morgan State University gets a $ 20 million pledge from a former student

Calvin E. Tyler Jr. dropped out of his hometown of Baltimore in 1963 before becoming a UPS truck driver because there was no way to pay for tuition.

He was soon promoted to management, eventually joining the company’s executive suite, serving as senior vice president and board member of the US business.

Tyler and his wife, Tina Tyler, graduated from what is now known as Morgan State University about 60 years after having to abandon school education and scholarships for students in financial distress. Promised to provide.

In this week’s announcement, officials said they believed the gift was the largest former student ever made at a historic black college.

“We want to offer scholarships so that talented young people can graduate, get a bachelor’s degree, and graduate from college without debt,” Tyler said in an interview. “At the same time I went to college for four years and got a degree, I was lagging behind with a debt of $ 80,000 to $ 100,000.”

The mortgage burden is especially severe among black students in four-year colleges, and research shows that they are more likely to borrow to school than whites. Pay an average of $ 7,400 more When they graduate.

Couple philanthropy is also coming as long-term college costs are becoming a front-line issue in Washington. President Biden proposes to expand the Federal Pel Grant for low-income students and cancel the federal debt of $ 10,000 per student, and Democratic progressives promote a more generous loan forgiveness program ing.

David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University, said he was partly motivated by the perception that the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the long-standing financial challenges of the Historically Black College and its students.

“Calvin knew that a lot of student loan debt was hurting too many first-generation college students,” Dr. Wilson said. “The Tylers are playing their part in minimizing it.” He said the gift will fund financially deprived students who have shown their willingness and determination to succeed. I added that it would be.

Tyler, now 78, enrolled in what was then called Morgan State University in 1961, studying business administration and accounting, and dreamed of getting his first college degree in his family.

But he didn’t have a scholarship and his parents couldn’t afford to pay the tuition — his father worked for a telephone company. So he had to pay in his own way.

“For financial reasons, I had to quit school and go to work,” Tyler said. He applied for a job at UPS, partly because he advertised that UPS was promoted from within that rank.

Approximately two years after becoming a driver, he changed jobs to a managerial position, eventually living in eight cities for the company, and changing jobs upwards until he retired in 1998, 34 years later. Told.

“Fortunately, UPS realized that I could take on bigger and bigger jobs. I was always willing to leave our comfort zone with my wife.” He said. “That’s what I’m that type of person — I wasn’t afraid to seize the opportunity.”

Tina Tyler was successful in real estate, but when the family was uprooted, he said she had to repeatedly rebuild her career in a new city.

He is now looking at himself when he sees students struggling to realize his college dreams, including those who have a loan at the time of graduation. Tyler said one of the main goals of his scholarship was to reduce the debt burden on students, which he called “getting out of the bang in this country.”

The Tylers have long been one of the university’s major benefactors, and the $ 20 million pledge represents an increase of $ 15 million from the $ 5 million that couples pledged to scholarships 15 years ago.

The Calvin and Tina Tyler Endowed Scholarship Fund has already supported 222 Morgan State University students, offering 46 full scholarships and 176 partial scholarships.

Dr. Wilson said the couple, who currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area and Las Vegas, have informed him of plans to increase their donations to $ 20 million in January and expand their scholarships to students outside the Baltimore region. It was.

“I dropped the phone,” he said.

Scholarships differ from many other scholarships in that they are intended for students with relatively low average grades.

“We didn’t want to give the scholarship only to the hands of a small number of selected students, so we concluded that the academic standard for this scholarship should be 2.5 instead of 4.0 instead of 3.8.” Said Dr. Wilson.

Founded in 1867 to train the Methodist Episcopal Church clergy, Morgan State University is now a public university with approximately 7,600 students.

The university was also a recent beneficiary of a $ 40 million gift from writer Mackenzie Scott, who was previously married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The donation was part of Over $ 400 Million Gifts from Scott Last year I went to colleges, including colleges that serve primarily black and Hispanic students.

In retrospect, Tyler says he was helped by everything he learned at Morgan State University, even though he didn’t graduate from school.

“That’s the way I feel about education, duration,” he said.
