Family members of the late Collins Chabane Local Government Mayor Moses Maluleke say they are now optimistic following developments in the investigation into his murder.
It comes after that three suspects were arrested Thursday night. According to the police, the details of their arrest will be released soon.
Maluleke was the first sitting mayor to be shot dead in the province. He was also the deputy secretary of the ANC in the Vhembe region.
The reason for his murder is still under investigation. The suspects allegedly demanded money from him at his home last Sunday but he shot at him three times with nothing.

According to police, one of the suspects is linked to various murders and robberies in Vhembe District. Police spokesperson Motlaela Mojapelo did not rule out the possibility of further arrests.
“The team assigned to investigate the murder of the mayor is already in an advanced state and we are ready to make a statement. We can confirm this and further details of the arrests will be included in the announcement,” adds Mojapelo.
Maluleke family spokesman Humphrey Mugakula said they hoped the arrests would bring them closure.
“We knew something good would come out of this investigation, and in the short amount of time we have been told as family members that the suspects have been arrested, we are happy to bring closure to what happened that day. The mood is so gloomy because we have received a lot of support from different people and governments,” says Mugakula.
Limpopo Premier Stanely Mathabatha commended the police for the progress.
Mathabatha spokesperson Willie Mosoma said: “We can indeed confirm that Limpopo Premier Stanely Chupu Mathabatha has been informed of the arrest of suspects in the killing of Collins Chabane Mayor, Councilor Moses Malueleke. The Prime Minister applauds the police for their crucial arrest and a futile appeal to the public to remain calm and let the police do their job.
Some members of the Xikundu Village community have expressed sadness over the loss of the mayor, saying it is a great loss to the community as he was very influential.
“I can speak for myself, I was very close to the mayor. I worked for him as a cook, so it’s a big loss. So, what is happening to our community is a sad thing, so we leave everything in God’s hands. We’re very happy that these guys were arrested, so that’s a good thing,” explains the community member.
Maluleke’s memorial service will be held in Saselamani on Monday. He will be buried on Tuesday in his native village of Xikundu, near Malamumele.
