The former mayor died in a car accident in Johannesburg this week. He was 52 years old.
The uncle described the final moments from his bedside at Milpark Hospital, where he breathed his last as he watched a family say goodbye to a giant still alive.

Moerane was due to contest the position of regional chair of the African National Congress (ANC) during his conference next weekend in Johannesburg.
His uncle Gift Moerane, former mayor of the municipality of Emfuleni, used these words to describe his nephew’s last days.
“He listened silently as we prayed around him. We prayed for his departure that his soul may rest in peace. It was exactly 5:55 p.m. when he left this world. And we are very happy that Mpho has been blessed by his church. We closed that moment of devotion with a prayer for his guardian angel to carry him home,” says Moerane.
