Meanwhile, political analyst Tessa Dooms has warned that some governments around the world put their populations at a higher risk of infection if they choose not to disclose new information about COVID-19 variants.
Several countries have implemented travel bans on Southern African countries – following the detection of the new Omicron variant by South African scientists last week
The UN says the continent should not be penalized for identifying and sharing new COVID-19 health information.
Dooms says more transparency is needed around the world to help curb the effects of the pandemic.
“The truth is that there are variations that are being discovered, especially in the United States, where these governments have not been so transparent. What we also saw was the impact of what in the United States was the [are] breaking waves. If we pretend that the variant and the science don’t exist, then we keep the public in the dark or put them at risk, but you reinforce the mistrust. The United States is a great example where you don’t have the kind of transparency that we see here and the results are people are less aware and more at risk, ”she explains.
Based on existing data, scientists expect current vaccines to remain protective against hospitalizations caused by Omicron.
