National death toll from COVID-19 in South Africa stands at 55,260 – Reuters

South Africa’s national death toll from COVID-19 has risen to 55,260. This after the country recorded 50 new COVID-19-related deaths on Monday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said most of the new deaths were recorded in the Free State.

“Unfortunately, we are reporting 50 other COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 4, Free State 30, Gauteng 6, Kwa-Zulu Natal 0, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 0, North West 0, Northern Cape 8 and Western Cape 2”, says Dr Mkhize.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in the country stands at 1,615,485. Collections amount to 1,526,638.

The number of tests carried out to date is 11,134,553.

Dr Mkhize will launch Phase 2 of COVID-19 vaccine deployment campaign in KwaZulu-Natal Tuesday at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

To date, nearly 150,000 people over the age of 60 have registered for the vaccine in the province.

The provincial health department urges those who are eligible to register on the electronic immunization data system.
