Debuting on Netflix last week, Closer has been criticized by LGBTQ + supporters, artists and Netflix employees for Chapel’s remarks and jokes about the trans-community.
He says during the special he is the term “Team TERF”, “trans-exclusive radical feminist”.
“Gender is a fact,” Chapel said in “Closer.” “Everyone in this room, every human being on Earth, had to go through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. That’s true.”
“With The Closer, we understand that the concern is not with offensive content, but with titles that can increase harm in the real world, such as further marginalization, hatred, and violence of already marginalized groups. “Sarandos writes. “Some employees disagree, but we have a strong belief that on-screen content does not directly lead to real harm.”
GLAAD, an LGBTQ media advocate, has denounced the comments made at “Closer” and challenged the position Salands had shown in his email.
“GLAAD was founded 36 years ago because media expression influences LGBTQ people. Genuine media stories about LGBTQ life directly increase public support for issues such as marriage equality. But movies and television are also full of stereotypes and misinformation that have been harmful to us for decades, especially to transgender and LGBTQ colored races. Ironically, Netflix’s documentary disclosure shows this very clearly, “GLAAD said in a statement.
CNN has contacted Netflix for comment and has not independently validated the email from Sarands.
Last week, the company suspended Terrafield, a senior software engineer who identified queer and transgender, who had publicly criticized “closer” on Twitter.
According to knowledgeable sources, Field and two other employees were suspended last week for attending a virtual meeting of directors and vice presidents without prior notice to the meeting organizer. Field said on Twitter on Tuesday that she had since returned.
When contacted by CNN earlier this week, a Netflix spokeswoman said, “Our employees are encouraged to openly oppose and support their right to do so.”
“Our goal is to entertain the world, which means programming to different tastes,” Salands said in an email. “We also support artistic freedom to help attract the best creators and support government and other censorship demands.”
