The governor of the state of New York Kathy Hochul late Friday declared a state of emergency in the state because of the continued spread of monkeys.

“I am declaring a State of Emergency to continue our efforts to fight the mosquito-borne disease,” Hochul tweeted.

He added that more than one in four deaths in the United States are in New York, with a disproportionate impact on at-risk groups.

As of July 29, New York state has a total of 1,383 confirmed cases of orthopoxvirus/monkeypox, according to the New York Department of Health website.

Earlier on Friday, Brazil and Spain reported the first monkey-related deaths outside of Africa.

The World Health Organization last week declared a global health emergency, the highest level, for the monkey outbreak.
