New Zealand reports record daily Covid-19 cases as Delta variant spreads

Wellington – New Zealand recorded the highest number of daily cases on Tuesday since the start of the pandemic last year, as the Delta variant of the coronavirus spreads in its largest city, Auckland.

The South Pacific nation reported 94 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday, including 87 in Auckland, bringing the total number of cases in the current outbreak to 2,099. There have been 28 total deaths from Covid-19 and 38 people are hospitalized because of the virus.

Once the poster child to eradicate Covid-19, New Zealand has battled a Delta epidemic that has spread to Auckland and its neighboring areas despite a strict lockdown and border closures.

About 1.7 million Aucklanders still face strict restrictions under a lockdown, although that has not stopped the outbreak of the virus. The lockdown in Auckland was extended for two weeks on Monday.

Authorities blamed offenders and unvaccinated people for the increase in cases.

“Rules matter to everyone and the demand for testing if you are symptomatic applies to everyone,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We need everyone who can be vaccinated (…) we all have a role to play,” she said.

New Zealand had remained largely virus-free for most of the pandemic until the Delta outbreak in mid-August. The government is now aiming to bring the country to life with Covid-19 through higher vaccinations. Almost 67% of the population is now fully vaccinated.
