I am deeply saddened to learn that three Eritrean refugees (two of whom are children) were killed in an airstrike that struck the Maiaini refugee camp in northern Ethiopia yesterday.
My thoughts and deep sympathy lie with the loved ones of those lost in this attack.
According to the information we received, four other refugees were injured. Thankfully, their lives are not at stake. UNHCR helps them get medical care.
Refugees are not targets and should never be targeted.
UNHCR continues to collect and corroborate the details of the case, but reiterates that UNHCR is calling on all parties to the dispute to respect the rights of all civilians, including refugees. Refugee residences must always be protected in line with international legal obligations.
