North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called on the country’s military to “mobilize by all means to eliminate the enemy”, state media said on Friday, as new satellite images showed strong support for a possible nuclear test. .
Kim made the remarks during a photo shoot with the military, state media, and others involved in a massive march on Monday, marking the 90th anniversary of the military establishment.
Photographs released by state media showed Kim riding a white horse and wearing a white military uniform with a gold trim while inspecting the troops.
Monday’s march has unveiled several of the North’s latest weapons, including a large intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Hwasong-17, and recently tested hypersonic missile.
The demonstration showed “the modern, courageous and dramatic development of the Republican Army and their troops with unparalleled technology,” Kim told the military at the photo session, state media KCNA reported.
North Korea has said it opposes the war and its weapons are for self-defense, but in a statement Monday that Kim’s nuclear program went beyond war prevention to defend the country’s “core interests.”
Last month North Korea resumed testing its largest ICBM, and there are signs it could test a nuclear weapon in the near future since 2017.
“Satellite imagery is now showing that preparation is successful and should not be underestimated as a waste of time,” the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) of the United States said in a report on Thursday.
Researchers and officials from South Korea and the US have said the North is showing resumption of Channel 3 at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, which is being used for an underground nuclear explosion before it is closed in 2018 n ‘between the denuclearization talks in Washington and Seoul. Kim has long said the country is not self-sufficient in self-determination and testing, but North Korea has not commented on the project or endorsed its intentions.
Commercial satellite imagery from Monday shows the construction of a new building, the remodeling of the plant, and the immediate expansion of infrastructure and facilities outside the new entrance to Channel 3, CSIS said.
“The date of the seventh nuclear test will depend solely on Kim Jong Un’s personal decision,” the report said.
