Numsa representative at Implats contractor killed

Numsa has convicted the murder of a shop assistant at Implats contractor Reagetswe Mining.

  • The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa condemned the murder of shop steward Mahlomola Hlothoane as “cold-hearted and brutal”.
  • The union said it was the second death of a Numsa official during Impala Platinum operations in the space of a year.
  • Numsa is currently in a standoff with Reagetswe Mining, Triple M and Newrak over pay and recognition.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said one of its shop stewards, Mahlomola Hlothoane, was killed in his home on Friday night.

Police have confirmed the incident and said there have been no arrests yet.

Hlothoane was a shopkeeper at Reagetswe Mining, a contractor of mining giant Impala Platinum (Implats). Numsa is currently in a stand with Reagetswe and two other Implats contractors – Triple M Mining and Newrak – over wages.

Numsa accused the three contractors of paying employees as little as a third of what Implats permanent employees are paid for the same level of work. However, the contractors denied this in a joint statement last week.

Last week, the Labor Court in Johannesburg Reagetswe Mining issued an interim injunction against strike action during its operations. Triple M CEO Sipho Xipu said that Numsa did not meet the company’s threshold for recognition, and that it could therefore only negotiate wages with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Numsa Secretary General Irwin Jim condemned the “cold-hearted and brutal” murder of Hlothoane.

“Comrade Mahlomola was a Numsa representative who assisted the union in coordinating the recruitment and mobilization of workers at Implats. He was killed Friday night at his home in Rustenburg by two unknown weapons,” Jim said.

The union said Hlotoane’s murder was the second death of a Numsa official who was organizing Implats operations. The statement said Hlothoane and Malibongwe Mdazo – who were killed last year – were “killed” for organizing workers at Implats. The union called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to bring the killers to justice.

“We demand that the SAPS urgently find and arrest those responsible for this heinous crime. It is unacceptable that people die simply for exercising their constitutional right to participate in a union of their choice,” he said. the statement.

Meanwhile, Xipu told Fin24 that an interim court order was issued in favor of Triple M in its Labor Law application against Numsa, and a final order was scheduled for August 18.

“Employees need to go back to work on Friday night shift and Saturday,” Xipu said.

Captain Aafie Botma confirmed that police in Phokeng are investigating the murder of a 45-year-old man living in Lukavillage and in the service of Reagetswe Mining, who was allegedly shot by two unknown men.

“The incident happened on Friday, June 24, 2022, at the victim’s rented place. The case is being investigated and no one has been arrested,” Botma said.
