Nzimande warns students to use NFSAS funds to support their families to stop – SABC News

Higher education minister Blade Nzimande said the ministry is aware that the vast majority of students in higher education come from disadvantaged families and some use support from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS) to support their families.

However, Nzimande warned that this was not allowed as the funds should be used for what they were intended for.

He gave a speech on the financing of the 2022 financial assistance program. Nzimande said his department had set aside Rt 47.3 billion for NSFAS after funding for the 2022 school year fell short to cover TVET colleges and public universities.

Nearly 700,000 students received funding through the program. He says the government is now fully involved in the distribution of funds and dealing with those who cheat on the system.

“We can’t allow NFSAS money to be misused. Abusers need to be nailed down because they steal from the poor. There are too many. I know someone who is a very successful senior official in government and his wife is a hospital mistress. Their children receive NFSAS. How come?”

NSFAS confirms that it has received money from the National Treasury

In April this year, NSFAS announced that it had received the first tranche of its budget appropriation from the National Treasury.
