Outcry after attack on gas station attendant in N Cape, EFF condemns attack – SABC News

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Postmasburg in the North Cape are calling for the immediate arrest of a man who allegedly assaulted a gas station attendant at the local gas station.

Images posted on social media show a man grabbing the gas station attendant and hitting him.

Gas station attendant Ogone Saulus says the man arrived at the gas station and started shouting insults as he got out of his car.

CCTV footage in the garage shows a man aggressively exiting the car and attacking a gas station attendant who was continuing to back up.

But the attacker continued to follow him, hitting him until he fell. The man shoots the keeper and continues to beat him.

The gas station attendant, Ogone Saulus, explains what happened. “On Wednesday a man came to the garage and started yelling insults at everyone. I walked up to him and asked him to calm down because I am not going to help him while continuing to insult people. He didn’t like what I said and that’s when he attacked me, he attacked me and hurt me. I don’t understand why the police don’t arrest him because he hurt me.

EFF in the province condemned the alleged attack, calling it a cowardly racist attack. The party’s labor office, Diggah Esau, says it is disappointed that police have yet to make an arrest.

“We note the racist cowardice attack that occurred when a white thug attacked the gas station attendant. It is clear from the available video footage that this was cowardice and a selfish attack on a black person. The gas station attendant can be seen not even trying to retaliate and this racist was instigated solely by his race. As EFF we see this as a disgrace and call for the immediate arrest of this author.

Police say they cannot make an arrest without conducting a proper investigation. “Police are investigating a simple assault after opening a case on February 20, 2021 in Postmasburg. The file will be submitted to the public prosecutor for the decision, police investigations are continuing, ”said the spokesman of the North Cape police, Dimakatso Mooi.

Saulus says he had a cut on his nose and a swollen face from the attack. He says he wants to see the man behind bars and be compensated for the injuries he suffered.
