Pakistan: Blast at the Shia Mosque in Peshawar kills dozens

More than 50 people were injured in the blast, according to Mohammad Asim, a spokesman for Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, where the victims were treated.

The source of the explosion is believed to be a suicide attack, but the investigation is ongoing, Peshawar police chief Muhammad Ejaz Khan told CNN.

So far, there has been no responsibility for the attack, one of the deadliest in recent years on Pakistan’s Shia minority, which has long been the target of violence by Sunni Muslim Islamist militant groups, including Pakistani Talibanor Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Thousands have been killed, many of them Shia Muslims, in sectarian violence in Pakistan, according to Human Rights Watch and other monitoring groups.

This is the deadliest attack in Pakistan since August last year, according to CNN figures.
