Australia great Ricky Ponting on Saturday said India Rishab Pant has what it takes to be a successful leader as the wicketkeeper-batter begins another IPL season captaining the Delhi Capitals.

Pant’s Delhi kick off their Indian Premier League action on Sunday against five-time champions Mumbai Indians in an expanded 10-team Twenty20 tournament.

Ponting, Delhi head coach, believes Pant, 24, has grown as a leader since becoming team captain last season.

“This is my fifth season at Delhi Capitals and Rishabh’s development as a player and as a person has been quite dramatic,” Ponting told reporters.

“There is no doubt that his maturity over the last 12 or 18 months has been outstanding with his game and also with his leadership and captaincy.”

Delhi, still in the hunt for their first IPL title since the moneyed league began in 2008, reached its third straight play-off last year.

Pant has been named as a future leader by the Indian cricket board and new all-format captain Rohit Sharma echoed that view.

Former Australian skipper Ponting said there were similarities between Pant and Rohit, who succeeded Ponting as Mumbai Indians captain in 2013 and guided them to five titles.

“There’s every possibility that Rishabh’s journey will be quite similar to Rohit Sharma’s,” Ponting said.

“To take on as a young captain of a successful franchise and grow every day. And hopefully Rishabh can achieve the same success that Rohit had with the Mumbai Indians.

“With some experience in a role like this in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, I have no doubt that Rishabh has every chance of becoming an international captain in the years to come.”

Pant, who has represented India in 67 white ball matches and 30 Tests since his international T20 debut in 2017, said his team goals always trump personal ambitions.

“I wasn’t thinking about my personal performance or anything,” said Pant, who was sitting next to Ponting at the press conference. “We’re just focused on the team goal, which for us as Delhi Capitals is the most important thing for the future.”

The 15th edition of the IPL kicks off on Saturday with defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
