Poor turnout reported in Zimbabwe parliamentary and council by-elections – SABC News

After Saturday, the results start to seep in Interim parliamentary and Council elections in Zimbabwee.

The country’s main political parties, Zanu-PF, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and the Coalition for Change (CCC), have been campaigning in recent weeks in the areas where the polls took place.

Participation was reported to be very low in most constituencies in the capital, Harare.

The participation rate was below 40% and in some cases below 30%. The only high turnout was in rural constituencies.

The Zanu-PF party currently controls the parliament with a two-thirds majority.

Parliamentary voting was conducted in eight of the country’s 10 provinces.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said on Friday that all logistical arrangements had been made and set up 1,317 polling stations in the eight provinces for parliamentary elections.
