President Ramaphosa has a case to answer in the Marikana massacre: EFF – SABC News

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says President Cyril Ramaphosa certainly has a issue to answer in the Marikana massacre.

Last week, the Johannesburg Supreme Court upheld the president’s exception that emails and phone calls to politicians urging them to take action against striking Lonmin miners did not involve encouragement or misconduct.

The miners claimed that an e-mail exchange between Ramaphosa and other key figures was said to have ignited the violence that would lead to the events of this fateful day in August 2012.

Over 300 miners filed a lawsuit against Lonmin which Sibanye Stillwater has since bought, Ramaphosa and the government.

Forty-four miners died in a strike in North West Township, demanding 12,500 rupees a month while many others were injured.

A spokesman for the party, Leigh-Ann Mathys, said: “Ramaphosa has a case to answer as an alleged mastermind of what is a very toxic collusion between the ANC government and Lonmin. This is what led to the massacre of workers in Marikana.

“It is now 10 years since the massacre in Marikana. These trials are long overdue for Ramaphosa to be exposed for his toxic role in killing miners. So that justice can be done for the victims of the massacres. It is also sad that Ramaphosa refuses to apologize for his atrocities that he committed solely for his money greed, “Mathys added.

At the same time, Ramaphosa has welcomed the verdict.

Vincent Magwenya, a spokesman for the president, said: “Thinking is a continuing politicalization that leads to unfair targeting and isolation of the president’s responsibilities. Others have tried to create wrong [impression] that President Ramaphosa is responsible for the killings. “

“By turning his attention to the verdict, Ramaphosa welcomes the Supreme Court’s ruling that the plaintiffs’ claims were legally flawed in various respects,” Magwenya added.
