In this interview with Dr. Tro Kalayjian – an obesity doctor who is the doctor and founder of Dr. Tro’s Medical Weight Loss and Direct Primary Care in New York – he explains the benefits of the LCHF (low carb, high fat) diet so simply that our country does not have to provide its citizens with a basic education in nutrition is downright miserable. If anyone needs further encouragement to listen to what Dr Tro has to say, he was used to 350 pounds! I knew I wanted to be a doctor from the age of 13. I saw my parents very sick. Self. I was sick. My whole family was sick. Diabetes. Obesity is predominant in my family. And I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I went to college, I studied health sciences and I went to medical school. And then I went to Internal Medicine and Yale related internal medicine program. I was in charge and then I got extra certification in obesity medicine. So I became a board member in obesity after that. I have been practicing for about 10 years. I have published five articles on obesity, overeating, cholesterol, diabetes and I have given lectures.
On his personal experience of LCHF
The most interesting thing about me is not my medical background. It’s the fact that I was 350 pounds and I was a doctor with a license on the table, a resident. I weighed 350 pounds and was in the most prestigious academic institutions with access to the smartest doctors in the world who really could not help me. So I had to learn how to deal with obesity. And I think, you know, I have street cred for that.
You know, you study all medicine. Not true? You are eager to study literature. I read Harrison’s textbook of internal medicine twice. You know all the original research and when you go into obesity, everything they told us, that we, quoting unquoted, generally know, was actually completely wrong. In fact, reducing your intake of whole grains, whether whole grains or processed grains, improves your diabetes. When you reduce carbs, you lose more weight than if you lower calories or lose fat. So what I found was that what we were told was not entirely true.
About deviations from LCHF, Banting, Atkins
That is a difficult task. I think for most people, you see, if you want to enjoy a certain food, you know, go ahead and enjoy it. Like if you’re in Paris and want a baguette, get a baguette, as we are meant to enjoy food. I think the more your metabolism is at risk, the less your body can tolerate. Not true? And it takes your body time to adjust to this diet so it can take, you know, two or three weeks to increase your body’s ability to burn fat as fuel. It’s a challenge and if you re-introduce carbohydrates, that process will take you a step back. But as long as you’re in your mind, you know, “hey, look, when I’m having this baguette in France or when it’s my birthday and I’m taking it with me, I might get hungry and I might need to take some time off. to get me back together “. I do not think all is lost. We are meant to enjoy food. We have to find a way to coordinate how to live a healthy life and how to be a human being, right?
About whether following an LCHF diet can send diabetes into remission
100%. Yes. We do this at our clinic every day. Without a doubt. So we have five years of research now that shows that many people can sustain that break for years. There are many things. You can make your blood sugar look better right away. In the long run, we must find a way to maintain it. And we have to work on losing weight and gaining muscle, improving sleep. All this affects the blood, blood sugar too. Not true? So this is a multifaceted process, but 80% plus is driven by carbohydrates and can be reversed with carbohydrates.
Where protein fits
There are some that limit protein. Very few people need to limit protein. There are a few situations where you may need to do this. For most people, I think they do not need to think about limiting protein or limiting fat when you are eating low carbs. Most people can just lower their carbs and not worry about much else.
