JOHANNESBURG — A proposal to rename one of the country’s busiest interchanges after world-renowned human rights lawyer and anti-apartheid campaigner, attorney George Bizos, is gaining traction.

The town of Ekurhuleni first announced plans to rename the Gillooly interchange, the busiest in South Africa and, it seems, the entire southern hemisphere in 2019.

It’s a long process, but Gauteng Geographical Names Committee chairwoman Sheena Satikge said it could now be concluded before the end of the year.

Satikge said the proposal to rename Gillooly’s Interchange after Geroge Bizos was prompted by the critical role the late lawyer played in the fight for democracy in South Africa.

“It’s just to honor and [to] to commemorate someone who stood up against apartheid and stood up for what is right. So it’s really the main thing to pay tribute to him with this exchange.”

The process of naming and renaming geographic features is mandated by law and Satikge said they should take their time and follow due process.

“It’s something based on law and policy and we have to adhere to the fact that we’re a democratic country that can’t make announcements about naming and renaming places without really making sure that the community is heard.

In this case, the information provided by the Town of Ekurhuleni in its application has now been verified and the next step will focus on the public consultation process.

Satikge said a final decision could be announced by the end of the year depending on when the public consultation process is launched.

“We sit quarterly as a committee and hope that by our next meeting we will then be able to process this name for presentation to the National Geographic Names Board for recommendation and possible approval by our Minister. , so it would then also depend on when the South African Geographical Names Board would meet.”
