  • The Proteas women added Masabata Klaas and Delmi Tucker to their England squad during the ongoing ODIs and upcoming T20I series.
  • The Proteas are 1-0 down with two games left behind the three-game ODI series.
  • Coach Hilton Moreeng says they’ve added Klaas and Tucker as back-ups should any problems arise during their tour of England.

The Proteas women have included spinner Masabata Klaas and all-rounder Delmi Tucker in the ongoing One-Day International (ODI) series against England.

South Africa are 1-0 down on the three-game ODI streak after a five-wicket loss on Monday in Northampton.

Klaas and Tucker arrived in the UK and joined the team in Bristol ahead of Friday’s second ODI at the County Ground.

The addition of Klaas is welcome news after the spinner fully recovered from a shoulder injury that ruled her out of last month’s tour to Ireland and last week’s one-off test against England.

Meanwhile, Tucker has been called up to England after a decent performance in South Africa’s 3-0 ODI series against Ireland last month in Dublin.

Proteas head coach Hilton Moreeng says the duo have been brought in as substitutes ahead of a grueling tour of the UK as the Proteas face England in three ODIs and three T20s ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

“Masabata Klaas and Delmi Tucker have now been recalled to the squad. The two players will serve as backups in the departments where we have a few issues, which is normal for back-to-back tours,” Moreeng said.

“They will bring a lot of freshness to the squad and create a lot of value in their disciplines, so we welcome them back to our squad and look forward to the rest of the Tour.”

Meanwhile, fast bowler Shabnim Ismail is fighting hard to return to the national team.

Ismail is recovering from a calf strain that ruled her out of the only Test and opening ODI against England.

At Monday’s post-game press conference, captain Sune Luus said she believes Ismail is ready to return. You will see in the next two practice sessions if she can attend full practice ahead of Friday’s second ODI in Bristol.

The Proteas women also confirmed they will name their squad for the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The second ODI begins at 3:00 p.m. (SA time).
