After a two-year wait, the Premier Soccer League has finally found a replacement for its third knockout competition, formerly known as the Telkom Knockout. This follows the announcement of the Carling Knockout Cup as a new competition to fill this spot from the 2023/2024 season.
After playing the past two seasons without this cup competition, PSL chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza that Carling Black Label is returning to the big league with a little difference.
“What are we going to do with the Telekom Cup? Today I’m excited to welcome this new sponsor, partner, longtime partner – all criteria of the best innovator in the country – our new sponsor.
“Because there is a gap in our calendar, remember the Telkom Knockout is played from October to December so there was a gap in that space but unfortunately because we were trying to find a balance in some things, affecting our programming but we had to find space on how to accommodate this new partnership because of the other adjustment related to the change of season of CAF competitions to find space as we know best we do adjusted the program.
“What we have done as a league is that this time we have agreed to discuss the exco. Exco is aware this time but they don’t know the name of the sponsor because again until the end we had to make sure they knew all the details what we are talking about so it was very interesting and encouraging when the proposal was sent to us though importantly, the name of the sponsorship is Carling Knockout Cup,” the Chairman explained.
He added that not only will the Carling Knockout Cup return as a cup competition featuring the 16 teams from the Premier Division, there will also be an exhibition match, pitting the cup winners of that competition against a select fan.
The relationship between the country’s leading brewer, AB InBev – formerly South African Breweries, and local soccer goes way back when they began sponsoring local soccer during the days of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in the 80’s.
Carling Black Label Brand Director Arne Rust has more on this partnership:
“For us it’s 10 years of Carling Cup and what’s going to happen in Carling Cup 2023 is the start of a new chapter, it’s another chance to bring innovation to the game, bring our fans closer to the heroes, the champion fans, to give them a voice for the game they love so much. That’s why we’re very proud – we look forward to writing this next chapter of the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup with you,” said Rust.
Khoza explains the new Carling XI exhibition game and says it will consist of players from the 15 other teams competing against the winners and based on fan selection. Among them would be five players from the Diski Challenge, he says.
The exhibition game is to be played on the Day of Atonement during the festive season, around the time mainly associated with the festive football tournament, especially in Gauteng Province.
