Ramaphosa Celebrates Thabo Mbeki’s Character in Birthday Post

Former President Thabo Mbeki turned 80 on Saturday and was honored at a celebratory dinner in Sandton.

JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa celebrated former President Thabo Mbeki – who turned 80 on Saturday.

Mbeki – who served as South Africa’s president between the years 1999 and 2008 – marked the major milestone at a lavish dinner in Sandton on Saturday night, which was attended by, among other dignitaries, the former statesman Kgalema Motlanthe.

In a pre-recorded message, Ramaphosa praised Mbeki, saying he continues to enrich South African public life through his presence, advice and participation.

“It is a cause for celebration to have reached this milestone and to be in good health, carried by a good spirit and as always, a wonderful humor. 80 years, they say, it is a jubilee of the oak where the oak symbolizes strength, endurance and wisdom. This is your place in South African public life.

“You continue to enrich the public life of our country through your presence, participation and guidance.”

Ramaphosa also thanked Mbeki for his guidance over the years.

It is an honor for me and for the government that I lead to have been able to count on you for your guidance and support over the years. It has been a comfort to us, and to me personally, to know that we continue to rely on your honesty when we fail to meet the expectations of our people.
