Rand Water in Gauteng announced the implementation of the first stage of water reductions with the aim of slowing the high level of water consumption.
In a statement, Rand Water says the hot summer months present a persistent challenge where use is increasing.
They say a number of factors associated with use have put a pressure on the water system.
According to Rand Water, South Africa is ranked among the driest countries in the world. However, the country continues to be among the largest consumers of drinking water despite the limited availability of the resource.
Rand Water warns that the situation could worsen if consumers do not change their behavior and reduce the demand for water.
Municipalities were urged to deal with leaks immediately and manage night-time flows through reservoir management protocols.
