The Razzies on Thursday revoked the satirical award they created to poke fun at Bruce Willis for his 2021 work, after his family announced he was retiring from acting due to the cognitive disorder aphasia.
The award’s founders also revoked a Worst Actress nomination for Shelley Duvall in the 1980 film The Shining over alleged mistreatment by the late director Stanley Kubrick.
The Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, skewer what they consider to be Hollywood’s worst films and performances each year on the eve of the Oscars.
They created a special category for Willis this year and nominated him eight times for Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a Movie of 2021 for each of his films, but revoked the award due to his recently announced diagnosis.
“When an individual’s medical condition is a factor in their decision-making and/or performance, we recognize that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie,” Razzie co-founders Mo Murphy and John Wilson said in a statement .
The Willis family made the announcement on Wednesday, four days after the raids.
The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that film set staff have raised concerns about Willis’s health in recent years and that filmmakers have reduced his roles due to his reduced capacity.
Symptoms of aphasia vary widely and can affect language, comprehension and reading, said Brenda Rapp, a professor of cognitive science at Johns Hopkins University.
The Razzies also said “extenuating circumstances” caused them to withdraw Duvall’s nomination because of “Stanley Kubrick’s treatment of her throughout production.”
Kubrick was known for demanding long hours and filming an extraordinary number of takes.
Duvall told The Hollywood Reporter last year the experience was traumatizing.
When asked if Kubrick had been unusually cruel or abusive, Duvall said, “He’s got that streak in him. He definitely has.”
