The late mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Moerane, was described as an enterprising, versatile leader who made his talent and creative energy available to the citizens of Johannesburg when accolades flowed for him.

He died Wednesday afternoon.

“He moved into a general office and put his extensive experience as a business owner and artisan early in his life to elevate citizens in the subway,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said when he expressed his condolences to Moerane’s family.

Ramaphosa said his thoughts extended to Moerane’s wife, Fikile and their four children, as well as the former mayor’s extended family and network of friends, comrades and colleagues.

Ramaphosa said:

We will miss your contribution to his political home, the African National Congress, and the development of Johannesburg as one of the most important economic and cultural centers in our country and continent.

Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse said he was greeted with numbing sadness by the news that the man was dead.

“He was the head of the ANC board and the former mayor of the city of Johannesburg, and although he sat in the hallway as a member of the opposition, he was always happy to get involved in developing the city and what Johannesburg leaders could do together to serve the interests of the residents.”

“Bitso (my namesake), as we lovingly called each other, holds a special place in my heart forever — not just as a colleague,” but as someone I called my friend, ”Phalatse said.

The larger ANC Johannesburg region also paid tribute to Moerane, who was his treasurer.

“His life was adorned with the service of the people and effective governance. He served as MMC of Environmental and Infrastructure Services and then as mayor of the subway, and will remember him as a lifelong activist.”

“Its death is a great loss for the ANC and the larger society,” the regional ANC said in a statement.

Moerane was in the hospital for a week after a terrible car accident.

Mike Maile, the family’s spokesman, announced his death at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

He said Moerane was admitted to the intensive care unit, where he received maximum professional medical treatment, support and round-the-clock care for his injuries.

Maile called Moerane “kind-hearted” and “always doing everything she can to support disadvantaged communities on the subway.”

From October 1 to November 22, 2021, he served as mayor of the people of Johannesburg.

He took office after the city quickly lost the mayors Jolidee Matongo and Geoff Makhubo in succession.
