Rishi Sunak and his wife donate over £100,000 to Winchester College | Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murthy, have donated over £100,000 to the Chancellor’s former private school, Winchester College.

The boys’ private boarding school, which costs £43,335 a year, revealed the donation in its annual diary.

A Sunak spokesperson said, “Rishi and his wife have donated to numerous charities and philanthropic causes for many years and will continue to do so. These donations are made to help fund scholarships for children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend Winchester.

The 2020 school newspaper also listed him as a benefactor who donated over £100,000 in total, suggesting he has been a regular donor.

Speaking about his private studies at Winchester, where he was Head Boy, Sunak told Sky last month: “I was really lucky to have this opportunity. It was something that was really extraordinary, that definitely put my life on a different trajectory.

“Like I said, it’s part of the reason I’m sitting here and I’m really grateful to have had this opportunity. And I look back on those times. It helped make me who I am. as a person and it helps me do the job the way I do it, and it confirms to me that education is one of the best tools we have in politics to multiply opportunities.

Labor pointed to Sunak’s previous claim that he had “maximised” the support he could give to state schools, while continuing to subsidize “elite private schools” through tax breaks.

Bridget Phillipson, shadow education secretary, said: ‘Britain should have the best public schools in the world. But after 12 years of Conservative neglect, four out of 10 of our children are leaving school without the qualifications they need.

“Labour would end the tax giveaway that Rishi Sunak distributes to his alumni network and use the money to improve every public school instead, ensuring that everyone leaves education ready for work and ready for the life.”

Sunak’s personal wealth has recently come under scrutiny due to investments his wife holds in Infosys, which had operations in Russia.

Murthy holds an estimated £690m stake in the Indian IT services company and receives around £11.5m in annual dividends. The Guardian reported last week that it was “urgently” closing its office in Russia.

Pressure was mounting on Sunak to respond to accusations that his family was collect “blood money” dividends from the company’s continued operations in Russia despite the invasion of Ukraine.

Labor leader Keir Starmer has called on the Chancellor to reveal whether her family had “benefited from the money made in Russia when the government put in place sanctions” against businesses and individuals.

After scrutinizing his wife’s stake in Infosys, Sunak told the BBC Newscast it was “very upsetting and…wrong for people to try to go after my wife”.
